The Tradition of March Bracelets (aka Martaki)

Every March, we return to a tradition that’s been part of Greek culture for generations: the March bracelet. Tied with red and white string, it’s worn as a symbol of protection, renewal, and the arrival of spring.

FROM OUR MOM TO US

A tradition that’s been passed down for generations. We grew up with our mom making March bracelets for us every year. On March 1, we'd tie them around our wrists waiting for spring to arrive. It was such a small thing, but one we loved.

As we got older, we started making them for our friends and now, we make them for you! The same tradition, shared in a new way.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

If you're new here, you're probably wondering "What's a March Bracelet?" The March bracelet, also known as Martaki, is a Greek tradition worn throughout the month of March. Typically made with red and white string, it’s believed to protect against the early spring sun and mark the transition from winter into brighter days.

Red is said to symbolize protection, strength, and warmth, while white represents purity, light, and new beginnings.

When the month comes to an end, the bracelet is traditionally removed and tied to a tree branch, in hopes that a bird will use it to build its nest, welcoming the season ahead.

DID YOU KNOW?

Fun fact: we source our March bracelet charms directly from Greece, handpicked by us during the summertime. We always make a stop at our little spot in the heart of Athens to choose them, and honestly, it’s hard not to buy everything. We spend way too much time debating favorites. It’s one of our favorite parts of the process.

Fast forward to January, and our favorite way to assemble them? Sitting on the couch, binge-watching Real Housewives, and making bracelets together. Time flies, and before we know it, they’re ready to be sent your way.
